Easter Meditations – How black is black?

Is there such a thing as total darkness?   American scientists have made what they consider to be the darkest material on Earth.  It is a substance so black that it absorbs more than 99.9 per cent of light!  Made from tiny tubes of carbon, the material is almost thirty times darker than the carbon substance used by the U.S.A. National Institute of Standards and Technology as the benchmark of blackness.  This material is close to the long sought ideal black that could absorb all  colours of light and reflect none.  “All light that goes in is basically absorbed”, the report stated.  The material that has been produced is three times darker than any other material known to science.  The material could be used in solar energy conversion and by the military.  If such is the darkness that can be produced by man’s ingenuity what of the darkness of an eternity where God has withdrawn His eternal light creating eternal spiritual darkness?

Jesus warned of an outer darkness where there is weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth in defiance of the God of their salvation. “How great is that darkness” are the words of Jesus (Matthew 6: 22,23).

This is that spiritual darkness that Peter writes concerning the fallen angels who are cast down to hell and delivered in the chains of darkness, to be reserved to eternal judgment (2 Peter 2: 4), while Jude echoes the same fearful facts (Jude vs 6, 13-15).

Job speaks of a land of darkness as dark as darkness itself (Job 10: 21,22).

Satan is the prince of darkness and the god of this world (Luke 22: 53).

Such darkness shrouds the souls of all who reject the One Who is the Light of the world. In hell that light has been withdrawn and so the unanswerable question remains: “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation”? (Hebrews 2: 3).

John, the last of the Apostles, was given an overwhelming view of the Eternal City and declared: “THERE WAS NO NIGHT THERE” (Revelation 21: 1-7, 22-25 and 22: 3-5).

THE WAY – THE TRUTH – THE LIFE

Without the Way, there can be no going;
Without the Truth, there can be no knowing;
Without the Life, there can be no growing.

Since Christ is the Way, we ought to walk in Him;
Since Christ is the Truth, we ought to trust in Him;
Since Christ is the Life, we ought to live in Him.
You Who are the Way, lead us;
You Who are the Truth, teach us;
You Who are the Life, continue to live in us
And love us.
