When a diamond is first discovered, it’s rough around the edges, jagged and unpolished. It’s far from the dazzling gem that most women swoon over.
Every diamond has to go through a journey before it can become someone’s precious possession.
Each diamond become a priceless gem in the hands of a gemcutter who is skilled, patient, delicate and a master of the tools of the trade.
When you think about it, each of us can liken ourselves to a diamond.
When we start out in life, we too are rough around the edges, unpolished and far from priceless, at least in the eyes of this world.
We all go through the journey that is life, filled with it’s ups and downs, joys and sorrows, trials and triumphs. This is not what I want to focus on.
I’d like to focus on the gemcutter.
As a man of faith, I consider God to be the Supreme and Perfect Gemcutter, but it’s not God that I want to focus on today.
Right now, I’d like us to turn our attention on ourselves.
Each one of us play the role of a gemcutter in the lives of those around us. We all have a certain level of influence and input in the lives of our family members, friends, coworkers and everyone else in between, some more than others.
The sooner we realise and embrace our role as a gemcutter, the better.
Our thoughts, words, actions and attitude: those are our tools. Those are the tools that we use everyday on the diamonds around us. We either polish these diamonds carefully or destroy them carelessly.
If we are honest with ourselves, we would all have to shamelessly accept the fact that we have been careless with the tools in our possession.
Sadly, we are also constantly on the receiving end of such treatment.
Things need to change.
We need to change, each one of us.
Question is, are we willing to change?
If each one of us were to treat every other person as we would want them to treat us, with love, respect, care and compassion, how wonderful would our world be!
This applies to every aspect of life.
Imagine what the world would be like if we chose to live out this kind of love everyday.
Imagine what the world would be like, if every gemcutter on this planet would use all the tools in their possession with the greatest of skill and care, understanding the great privilege we have in shaping the diamonds around us.
We cannot change others, but we can choose to change ourselves.
I am willing to change. Are you?
Thanks for reading.
Thank Sri 🙂
